Precision and speed: NIR spectrometers for modern process analysis
NIR spectrometers (Near-Infrared) from Harrer & Kassen are indispensable tools for efficient and reliable material analysis. Using the latest technology, they enable fast, precise and non-invasive measurements in real time and thus support a wide range of industrial applications – from food production to the chemical industry.
What are NIR spectrometers?
NIR spectrometers are instruments that use light in the near infrared range (700 – 2,500 nanometers) of the electromagnetic spectrum to analyze material properties. They are based on the interaction of light with molecules in a sample. Certain chemical bonds such as water, fat or protein absorb light in the infrared wavelength range, among others. Spectral analysis of this absorption makes it possible to determine the composition and quality of materials.
NIR spectroscopy technology offers a non-destructive method that is fast and efficient. It delivers results in real time, making it ideal for process monitoring. The measurement is not limited to solid samples – liquids, powders or pasty substances can also be analyzed. The non-invasive approach makes them particularly valuable for applications where high sample integrity is required.

How NIR spectrometers work
NIR spectrometers (near-infrared) use the near-infrared spectrum of light to obtain information about the chemical composition and physical properties of materials. Here is a simplified explanation of how they work:
Light source and detection
A material sample is illuminated with a halogen lamp. The light hits the product and is diffusely reflected or transmitted. A detector measures the infrared part of this light and generates a spectrum.
This spectrum is compared with a reference spectrum. This results in an absorption spectrum that provides information about the chemical and physical properties of the sample.
Real-time process control
Thanks to the immediate evaluation of the data, production processes can be monitored and optimized in real time – from the receipt of raw materials to the final inspection.
